2 Timothy 3:14-17, “The Message of the Bible”
Speaker: Brad Evangelista Series: “God Wrote a Book” Passage: 2 Timothy 3:14–17
2 Timothy 3:14-17
Intro: Written over 1500 years, by over 40 men, from a variety of backgrounds, the most stunning and spectacular trait of the Bible is that it weaves a tapestry that proclaims one common, consistent, and simple message-God saves sinners in Christ.
1. The Bible is by far the most unique, majestic and trustworthy historical book.
• Manuscript evidence, Composition
• Proverbs 30:5
2. The Bible can be hard to digest.
• By its sheer volume alone it is intimidating. It contains 66 books, (39 OT, 27 NT), was written over a 1500 year span, by approximately 40 men from a variety of different backgrounds-prophets, priests, kings, peasants, prisoners, physician, shepherds, tax collectors, fisherman, and homeless itinerant preachers who did tent making on the side for support.
• Even one of the writers of the Bible, Peter, says that things Paul wrote are hard to understand (2 Peter 3:15-16).
• You cannot merely snack on it and be spiritually healthy. (Psalm 1:1-4)
3. Understanding the Bible is a slow, life-long pursuit.
• Be honest about where you are. Like a learning a language that you never stop discovering.
• Hebrews 5:12-14
4. The Bible should produce deep humility in us.
• Hebrews 4:12-13
5. The Bible is first and foremost a Book about God, not us.
6. Because of the Bible's claims, indifference and neutrality is not an option.
• The Bible claims an authority and an exclusivity that makes neutrality impossible.
• John 14:6: Acts 4:12
7. The Bible is given to lead us to new life in Jesus, not to just improve the life we already have.
• John 5:39; John 20:30-31; John 17:3
